Jeff’s Schedule for 7/31-8/5, 2017

I’m volunteering this week at The House in the Horseshoe State Historic Site, in Moore County NC. It’s time for the annual Battle Reenactment, honoring the people on both sides of the FIRST American Civil War, commonly referred to as The American Revolution. It’s the story of two men with big egos and bad tempers who got into a serious firefight that had to be sorted out by a very brave and sensible woman. Some things never change, I guess. If you’re interested, here’s more info.

While I’ll be pretty busy this week, I can always make time to help YOU be a Successful Gardener! If you live in Chatham, Lee, or Moore County, NC, and you’d like me to come by and help you with a garden consultation, I’d love to do it. I’m familiar with all kinds of landscapes, urban lot or country homestead, good red land of the Piedmont, or the sandy loam of the Sandhills. They each have their challenges and their beauty. In an hour, I can solve problems, identify plants, show you some opportunities, and help you enjoy your garden even more! If you’re interested, contact me here.

I farmed and operated a plant nursery in NC for 15 years, and was an NC Cooperative Extension agent for 8 years. In that time, I learned a LOT about farm production and farm business management. I can help you with organic certification, transition to organic practices, and marketing your farm and food products. To learn how to cultivate profit on your farm, contact me here.

I’m a certified small business consultant as well. In these times of great opportunity, strategic planning is essential for success. I can help you write a business plan, construct enterprise and cash flow budgets, and do market research. Individual consultations and group trainings are options for getting the information you need to succeed! To take advantage of the opportunities that are available to small business owners, contact me here.

Remember to enjoy your garden, because THAT’S what makes you a Successful Gardener!

Hope to see you some time this week! Come see me at The ‘Shoe next weekend!

Peace, Grace, & Love,
Jeff

Jeff’s Schedule for July 24-29 2017

Seed saving is a very simple way to support biodiversity in your Living Garden. By saving your own seeds, you create a new variety of plant that is unique to your garden. You have 3 opportunities this week to learn more about saving seeds from your plants. Hope to see you!

Monday, July 24, 2017 Successful Gardener at the Homestead 6-8PM
Reynolds Homestead, Critz, VA

“Save Those Seeds!”
Every plant makes seed of some kind, often numbering in the thousands. Nature uses that Abundance to create more plants. We can do the same in our own gardens, too. We can create new varieties of a plant, we can make plants hardier for our location, and even select new colors of foliage or bloom. But we can also keep a variety as “true” as we can. We’ll look at plant reproduction, the ways we can use those processes, and share how to work with (and sometimes against) Mother Nature to get the good food and beautiful flowers we love.

I think seed saving is so important that I’m having two classes to give more folks the opportunity to learn how to promote genetic diversity. Come join us! If weather permits, we’ll be at the farm, so dress for the weather!

Home, Farm, & Business consultations
Remember that Summer is great for spending time in the garden, not just working, but enjoying your garden. Feed your body good food from the garden. Feed your mind new knowledge as you learn more about nature. Feed your soul just by watching things grow. All this while having a beautiful place to sit and enjoy coffee before breakfast or a glass of wine in the evening. Get the kids outside and away from “the screen”. Decompress after a hectic day on the job. The movement and exertion of gardening has long been considered a beneficial physical activity, and you get food or flowers as a result!
If you’re not getting those benefits from your garden, right now is the time to change that. I can help you evaluate your home landscape and find the right landscape for your family. In a one hour consultation, I can solve problems, identify plants, show you some opportunities, and teach you some cool shortcuts that make gardening more fun and interesting. If you’re interested in enjoying your garden even more, contact me here.

Organic farming has seen tremendous growth over the last few years, even while other sectors of  agriculture have slumped.

As a former Small Business Center Director in NC, I can tell you that these are times of great opportunity for small business owners. Many small businesses can be started for as little as $100! To take advantage of these opportunities, strategic planning is essential. I can help you write a business plan, construct enterprise and cash flow budgets, and do market research. Individual consultations and group trainings are options for getting the information you need to succeed! Jeff’s Schedule for July 17-22, 2017

This week, I’m taking some time for family. My grandson Andrew is in town, and we’re hiking, “sciencing” (at Sciworks in Winston-Salem, NC) and otherwise hanging out for a few days. Then it’s back at it. Hope to see you soon!

Friday, I’m headed to one of my favorite places – Valle Crucis, NC. I’m teaching and working at Wild Herb Weekend, an event sponsored by the NC Herb Association. It’s 3 days of learning, teaching, and doing at the beautiful Valle Crucis Conference Center. You can find out more here.

Jeff’s Schedule for July 10-15, 2017

This week I’m in Matthews, NC, working on a couple of projects, one old, one brand new. The older one is The Living Garden display garden at Renfrow Farm. We’re getting plenty of produce now, with more to come. The only insects I see in any numbers are beneficials – all kinds of pollinators, predators, & parasites!

The new project is a tomato yield project. I’m running some tests to see if we can increase yields without increasing acreage. We just put in 26 “Supersonic” tomatoes two weeks ago, with some of the nutrients put down preplant. That’s agronomist lingo for the fertilizer put down before planting. I cultivated and caged them this week. I noticed we had our first blooms, so it’s time for tissue samples. Those will be tested for nutrients, and we’ll get recommendations for any new fertilization. I’ll keep you posted on both of these projects.

On Wednesday, I’ll be headed back to Locust Ridge to work on some personal projects. I’ll be there through the weekend.
