Jeff’s Schedule for May 29-June 3, 2017

This week is a very different one for me, as I am building some hardscapes at the Valle Crucis Conference Center all week. VCCC is a beautiful place in the mountains near Boone, NC. Learn more about VCCC here. My work at VCCC is an outgrowth of my participation in Wild Herb Weekend, the annual conference of the NC Herb Association. I’ll be teaching at WHW again this year, leading 4 Yoga classes and teaching a Business class. Here’s more information on WHW.

Spring has been a very busy time for me this year, with lots of classes and consults all over Piedmont NC. THANKS to all of you who’ve attended classes or became a consulting client!!! There are still lots of classes ahead at Renfrow Farm, Reynolds Homestead, Wild Herb Weekend, and more!

In my 30+ years as a professional, I’ve designed and installed all kinds of landscapes, from formal herb gardens to Permaculture homesteads. In an hour, I can solve problems, identify plants, show you some opportunities, and help you enjoy your garden even more! If you’re interested in a home garden or landscape consultation, contact me here.

I farmed and operated a plant nursery in NC for 15 years, and was an NC Cooperative Extension agent for 8 years. In that time, I learned a LOT about farm production and farm business management. I can help you with organic certification, transition to organic practices, and marketing your farm and food products. To learn how to cultivate profit on your farm, contact me here.

In these times of great opportunity for small business owners, strategic planning is essential for success. I can help you write a business plan, construct enterprise and cash flow budgets, and do market research. Individual consultations and group trainings are options for getting the information you need to succeed! To take advantage of the opportunities that are available to small business owners, contact me here.

Remember to enjoy your garden, because THAT’S what makes you a successful gardener!!!

Peace, Grace, & Love,
Jeff

This week, we’ll be stirring up some of the magic of soil building in “Soil Alchemy”. Healthy soil is the basis for healthy food. You can work a little magic in your garden by using composts, mulches, and cover crops. Our part of this transformation is actually quite simple. It’s the “critters” that live in a healthy soil that do the real work.

The strange word at the end (and/or sometimes at the beginning, too) of a Yoga class. Do I have to say it? What exactly am I saying? In this workshop, you’ll find out. We will spend some time with the history and meaning of the word, how and why it’s a part of Yoga in the West, and how to make it a part of your practice. With that new knowledge, we’ll get some new experiences on our mats.

Jeff’s Schedule for May 8-13, 2017

This is a very unsettled Spring season. Up on Locust Ridge, in the Virginia Blue Ridge, we’re still having chilly temps. It’s more like April than May! The recurring rains slow down planting and harvest both. But that’s gardening in the Spring! Hope you’re able to get your hands in the soil this week.
I’m starting a new gardening class series this week. “How Does Your Garden Grow?” will be held at the South County Regional Library in Charlotte, NC. Details are below.

Tuesday, May 9,2017 630-730PM

With vacations and family activities taking over everybody’s summer schedules, Yvette and I have decided to combine the Monday and Tuesday classes. I’ll be teaching on Tuesday evenings most days, with Yvette filling in on other days.

Jeff’s Schedule for May 1-7, 2017

As the garden season continues to build, my semester at Central Carolina Community College is wrapping up. It’s been a good Spring semester at CCCC, with some great students in my class on Farm Business Management. One of the best parts of teaching is to see the amazing improvement in skill set and knowledge in my students. As a result of the semester’s end, most of my extra time this week will be spent grading papers. And I’ll learn a lot as I do!

Sunday, May 7, 2017 HHPC Board of Directors meeting, 1PM
House in the Horseshoe State Historic Site, Sanford, NC
Here’s info on the site.
“The Shoe”, as we affectionately call this beautiful 1770’s house in Moore County, NC, has a long and storied history that takes a long time to tell. It’s better told on-site, anyway, so plan a trip to visit! I serve on the Board of Directors for The Shoe, and this is one of our quarterly meetings. We plan the great activities for the year, culminating in the reenactment of the Revolutionary War skirmish that left bullet holes in the house that you can still see today.
One of our newest efforts is the creation of The Horseshoe Gardeners. We’re looking for folks to help us tend the grounds around the house, and to tell the agricultural history of the area. We know that native Americans lived in the area, and most of those were both hunters and farmers. The historic area is still surrounded by a modern working farm, so that’s another long story to tell. If you’re interested in volunteering, let me know!

Remember to enjoy your garden, because THAT’S what makes you a Successful Gardener!
Peace, Grace, & Love,
Jeff
